Overview

Mound Bayou, MS was founded in 1887 by Isaiah T. Montgomery, an ex-slave from the plantation of Joseph Davis, older brother and mentor of Jefferson Davis, former president of the Confederacy. Montgomery, along with Benjamin Green  purchased the 840-acre land which became Mound Bayou, MS, for $7 per acre. Mound Bayou is a remarkable demonstration of Black unity, resiliency, dedication, faith, collective economics, and self-governance. From uninhabitable swamp land, former slaves created one of the most successful all-Black towns in America. Mound Bayou boasted  6 churches, a train depot, 3 schools, 40 businesses, 3 cotton gins, zoo, library, bank, and a hospital. There was also a cotton seed oil mill where numerous Blacks were employed. All of this was the work of men and women who had once been slaves! Black excellence at its best! Come learn with us!
