History Lives!

Unit 5: Slavery in the U.S. (1619 – 1865)

Class 8: Free Blacks During Slavery

Many people have many misconceptions about American slavery. Many believe that ALL Black people were slaves and ALL White people owned slaves. This is far from the truth. At the time of the Civil War, there were 500,000 free Blacks in America - 250,000 in the South and 250,000 in the North. Furthermore, two-thirds of Whites did not own any slaves, and only a small percent owned more than 5 slaves. What was life like for free Blacks? Did free Blacks fight for the freedom of enslaved Blacks? Did they own slaves themselves? Did they own land? This class provides answers to these questions and more. Re-learn. Knowledge is Power!
