Unit 1: Class 9 - Ancient Egypt: The Middle Kingdom & Second Intermediary Period (2055 B.C. – 1550 B.C.)

Unit 1, Class 9 explores the Middle Kingdom and Second Intermediate Period of ancient Kemetic/Egyptian history. The Middle Kingdom was founded by Mentuhotep II (pictured), who ruled for 51 years. After he reunited ancient Kemet, Mentuhotep II strengthened the central government and reduced the power of the local nomarchs who were responsible for causing the First Intermediate Period of ancient Kemetic history in which the kingdom collasped. The Middle Kingdom also saw rise to the very first historically attested female pharaoh of ancient Kemet (Egypt) -  Sobekneferu. She was the last ruler of the Twelfth Dynasty of Egypt and governed Egypt for almost four years from 1806 to 1802 BC. Her name means "the beauty of Sobek."
